4C or the

quintessence of

perfection

The beauty of diamonds cannot be closed in frames of any strict definitions. Therefore, for the purpose of fair valuation of diamonds, the experts have developed criteria which objectively determine the value of each stone. They are known all over the world as 4C Principle. According to them, the most important factors are: Carat Weight, Clarity, Colour and Cut. That is why two diamonds appearing to be identical could have a completely different value. The differences are in details.

Carat Weight
It is expressed in metric carats with an accuracy of two decimal places. One carat (1 ct) is equal to 0.20 gram. It means that a diamond weighting 1 gram has 5 carats. Precious Stones with high number of carats very rarely occur in nature.

Diamonds’ clarity
Inclusions are a characteristic feature of all precious stones. They are created deeply underground in the process of stone formation. They are often microscopic and cannot be seen with the naked eye. It is possible to determine its clarity only by observing a stone enlarged. The fewer inclusions the greater value of a diamond.

Diamonds’ colour
It is determined with the use of a special scale described with letters from D to Z. Generally diamonds which are whiter are closer to the begging of the scale, and their prices are higher. Prevailing majority of diamonds have minor yellow or brown tints. They are fully natural and considered typical colours. Absolutely colourless precious stones are the most rare and valuable.

Diamonds’ cut
Diamonds can be divided into those with a brilliant cut and a fantasy cut, such as a heart, marquise or pear. It is the cut which makes an impression that diamonds shine. This shine is professionally called brilliance. This phenomenon occurs as a result of complete internal reflection and dispersion of the rays of light and their reflection from flat surfaces of a diamond i.e. facets. An experienced diamond cutter will polish a diamond so that it shines as brightly as it is possible.
